The Òrìṣà tradition’s living substance is carried, in any generation, by a relatively small number of practitioners whose work and presence gives shape to what the tradition becomes. Stephanie June Benoric Omoladun Ayoka — known within the community as Iyanifa Iyasango — is one such figure.
This profile is the first in what we anticipate will be a regular Member Spotlight feature in the Journal — short video portraits of practitioners whose work in the diaspora and in West Africa is carrying the tradition forward in particular and consequential ways.
Editorial note: This article will be expanded with a fuller written companion piece in a forthcoming issue, drawing on Iyasango’s own words about her path, her practice, and her work within the Assembly. Readers wishing to suggest figures for future Member Spotlights are invited to write to the editorial address.
